Purpose:
Poor Job! If you ever feel like you have it rough just sit and read Job and you will feel better. Job didn't do anything wrong but God allowed all these horrible things to happen to him. God causes or allows all things...why? for our good and His glory. A sovereign and just God with His and our best interests at heart. Job suffered an unimaginable amount and Jesus suffered an unimaginable amount...the difference? Jesus didn't ask why. Job is a cool guy ,and I can only hope that I would handle that situation as well as he did, but my Jesus is better! What does a parachute have to do with all this? Well...God has our back! He catches us when we fall, He corrects when we are wrong, He puts us back on track, He holds our hand, He throws us in the fire so we can come out stronger, and He loves us so totally and completely! When I feel like I am falling chances are I am, but I can rest in knowing that I will have a smooth landing. Jesus told us that life would be hard and that we are not on an easy road. The story of Job really opened my eyes to people's sufferings. Christians who are suffering are not always suffering because they are being punished or because they are not "in tune" with God. When you look at someone who is suffering you have no idea what God is doing in their life. Maybe He is testing them like he was testing Job. Maybe God is refining them. Maybe God is doing something amazing and the suffering is necessary to make the outcome extra fantastic. You cant taste sweet with out first tasting sour and man I bet Job was on a sugar high for a long long time after God was finished. He got double of everything that he had before. He lived for another 4 generations and got to see his family grow and died a happy man full of days. I can just see all those grand kids surrounding Job as he tells them the amazing story of God giving and taking away and blessing him beyond measure. To this day we are learning from Job, the man whose ears had heard of God's goodness but then his eyes got to see God's goodness. If the purpose for all that suffering was so that 2000+ years later you and I can could read the story and learn about this awesome servant and example and see through Job that God is good and our protector, I say that is worth it. It gets better though, because you and I turn around and teach this to kiddos and they don't forget much. I remember in Sunday school as a kid catching marshmallows in our mouths to represent manna from heaven. God's provision in the hot barren desert. If these kids can remember that God was there for Job and never left his side though his horrible suffering and that the God in the story is the same God who loves them and will never leave them, then that is a win. We can rejoice freely because we know that God is doing good things! always! and rejoice because he chooses us to use.
